Hope for Steung Meanchey

Once home to the city’s public garbage dump, this nearly 100 acre smoldering mound was covered with hundreds of people sifting through rubbish for anything that could be recycled, eaten, or collected.  Harmful levels of toxins from the burning rubbish, dead animals or discarded chemicals amongst the waste were ever-present.  This community, Steung Meanchey, has become near and dear to the heart of Hope For the Silent Voices and has led to children being able to attend school for the first time. In doing so, a day at school also prevents a child who might otherwise stay at home alone from being exploited while a parent is away at work.
